Bible Verses:

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)

“God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24)

My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” (John 4:34)

JESUS TALKS WITH A SAMARITAN WOMAN (vs. 1-26)

Jesus left Judea and went to Galilee through Samaria.  There, he met a Samaritan woman and asked for a drink.  The Samaritan woman was surprised because Jews never associated with the Samaritans.  While they were talking, Jesus said that he can give living water to those who ask.  And he revealed to her that she had five husbands.  He also told her that God is Spirit, so his worshipers must worship in Spirit and in truth.  Then he asserted that he is Christ the Messiah.

THE DISCIPLES REJOIN JESUS (vs. 27-38)

The Samaritan woman believed and went back to her town and told them that she had met Christ.  Meanwhile, his disciples told Jesus to eat but Jesus said: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.  He sowed the seed and wanted them to reap the harvest.

MANY SAMARITANS BELIEVE (vs. 39-42)

Many Samaritans believe in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony.  They urged Jesus to stay with them for two more days.  They have heard His words and know that Jesus is the Savior of the world.

JESUS HEALS THE OFFICIAL’S SON (vs. 43-54)

When Jesus arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcome him.  When a royal official heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee, he begged him to come and heal his son who was close to death.  Jesus said:  “You may go. Your son will live” (v. 50).  The man took Jesus at his word and departed.  While he was on his way, his servants met him with good news.  The fever left him at exactly the time Jesus told him that his son will live.

THOUGHTS:

  1. Christ set an example to win souls.  He did not allow personal prejudices or cultural restriction or physical needs to hinder him.  He dealt with the woman primarily in a friendly way to present the way of salvation.
  2. The Samaritan woman believed in Christ and share the good news.  We should likewise share the gospel to the sinners.
  3. The food of Jesus is to do the will of God.  The will of God is to bring his work to completion.  We need the spiritual food for God to give us the strength to do whatever God had entrusted to us.
  4.  The official has great faith in God.  First, he believed enough to approach Jesus.  Next, he took the word of Jesus and departed.  Finally, he led his whole household to believe in Jesus.  May we use our faith and make it grow.
  5. Jesus said: “Unless you people see miraculous sign and wonders, you will never believe” (v. 48).  Satan is able to perform signs and wonders to deceive.  Our salvation must not based on feelings, dreams, visions or voices.  It must be faith in Christ and in God’s Word alone.
