SCRIPTURE: LEVITICUS 24
BIBLE VERSES:
“Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who curses their God will be held responsible; anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.” (lEVITICUS 24:15-16)
OIL AND BREAD SET BEFORE THE LORD (vs. 1-9)
THE LORD TOLD MOSES TO DO THESE:
- Command the Israelites to bring clear oil of pressed olives for the light.
- Aaron must tend the lamps from evening to morning to keep it bright continually outside the curtain of Meeting.
- Take fine flour and bake 12 loaves of bread suing 2/10 of an ephah for each loaf.
- Set them in 2 rows, six in each row on the table of pure gold before the Lord.
- Put some pure incense in each row as a memorial portion to offer to the Lord regularly Sabbath after Sabbath on behalf of the Israelites.
- The bread belongs to Aaron and his sons to be eaten in holy place.
A BLASPHEMER STONED (vs. 10-16)
There was a man, son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father who had a fight with an Israelite. He blasphemed the man, and the Lord with a curse. They brought him under the custody of Moses. The Lord told Moses to take the blasphemer outside the camp. Those who heard him laid their hands on his head and the entire assembly stoned him to death.
OTHER LAWS ( vs. 17-22)
- Anyone who takes the life of a human being must be put to death.
- Anyone who takes the life of someone’s animal must make restitution – life for life.
- Anyone who has done to his neighbor must be done to him: Fractures for fractures, eye for eye, tooth for tooth.
- Same laws are applicable to aliens and the native born.
THOUGHTS:
THREE IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLITIES TO THE LORD ARE GIVEN IN THIS CHAPTER:
- Provide oil to keep it shining continually.
- Present the bread to the Lord and to be given to the priest. The priest must preach the true bread and truth of God.
- Protect the name of the Lord – God’s name is to be glorified not to be blasphemed. We must not use his name in swearing but must honor God with reverence.
