SCRIPTURE: JOSHUA 2
BIBLE VERSES:
“Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” (Joshua 2:13-14)
RAHAB AND THE SPIES (vs. 1-24)
Joshua sent two spies to look over the land of Jericho. The two men went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. When the king of Jericho heard about it, he sent message to Rahab to bring out the men who entered her house. But Rahab hid them under the stalk of flax on the roof. When the men sent by the king arrived at Rahab’s house, Rahab told them to pursue them before the gate closed. So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road. After the men left, Rahab set an agreement with the two spies to spare the lives of her family when they will come to conquer the land. The men told her to tie a scarlet cord in the window and brought all her family into the house. They agreed and Rahab let them down by a rope through the window and sent them away. The spies left and hid in the hills for 3 days until the pursuers return without finding them. The two spies returned to Joshua and told him everything that had happened to them.
THOUGHTS:
The visit of the two spies meant salvation for Rahab and her family. Her faith revealed in work and saved her and her family from destruction. She later became an ancestors of Christ.
Rahab was a pagan, a Canaanite and a prostitute. Yet she recognized the God of Israel is God in heaven above and in the earth below. Today, we have the same powerful and miracle working God. As He had the power to save Rahab, He is also powerful to save us from eternal death.
