SCRIPTURE:  2 SAMUEL 13

AMNON AND TAMAR (vs. 1-21)

Amnon was one of David’s son who fell in love with Tamar.  David’s brother Shimeah had a son named Jonadab who was a friend of Amnon.  When he knew Amnon was in love with Tamar, David’s daughter, he schemed a plan for them to be together.  He told Amnon to pretend being sick and asked David to let Tamar bring special bread for him.  When Tamar delivered the food to Amnon, he raped her.  When her brother Absalom knew about it, he hated Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar.

ABSALOM KILLS AMNON (vs. 23-39)

Two years later, Absalom invited all the king’s son to go to Baal Hazor.  Since the king would not go, so he requested Amnon to join them.  Then Absalom ordered his men to kill Amon when he was drunk.  So, his men struck down Amnon.  Absalom fled and went to Talmal, son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur and stayed there for three years.  But King David mourned for his son every day.

THOUGHTS:

David was now reaping the harvest of what he sowed.  Amnon violated a virgin whom he could not wed.  As a result of lust, his son Amnon was killed by his another son Absalom and his daughter Tamar was being ostracized in Israel.

Jonadab, the cousin of Amnon encouraged him to commit sexual sin.  Be sure to evaluate advice from other person or even a relative and see if it conforms to God’s standard.

After raping Tamar, Amnon was sending her away to look as if Tamar was the one at fault because there were no witness there.  He has no real love to her but lust that results in self-disgust and hatred of the other person.
