Our Daily Scripture – 1/8/24 (Mon)

SCRIPTURE:  PSALM 42

MEMORY VERSES:

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  My soul thirst for God, for the living God.  When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2)

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?  Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (Psalm 42:5, 11)

The author of Psalm 42 was written by the descendants of Korah.  Korah was a Levite who led a rebellion against Moses.  he was killed but his descendants remained faithful to God and continued to serve God in the temple.  David appointed men from the clan of Korah to serve as choir leaders and they continued to be temple musicians for hundreds of years.

This psalmist was very depressed and said: “Why are you downcast, o my soul?” twice in verses 5 and 11.  He kept searching for God in his hour of need but could not find Him.  He felt like a thirsty deer in the desert searching for water.  As he looked back to “the good old days”. his depression was aggravated.  he longed to return to Jerusalem and worship in the temple.  Then he focus in God and put his hope Him.  He remembered God’s love and prayed to God to sustain him.

THOUGHTS:

One of the most common emotional ailment is depression.  The antidote for depression is to meditate on God’s goodness.  This will take your mind  off the present situation as you focus your thoughts in God’s ability to help you.
