Our Daily Scripture – 2/13/24 (Tuesday)

SCRIPTURE:  PSALM 78

MEMORY VERSE:

“Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands” (Psalm 78:7)

Asaph reviewed the history of the Exodus, their wilderness journey and the conquest of Canaan.

GOD’S MIRACLES TO THE ISRAELITES:

  1.  He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand firm like a wall. (v. 13)
  2.  He guided them with he cloud by day and with light from the fire all night. 9v. 14)
  3.  He split the rocks in the desert and gave them water as abundant as the seas. (v. 15)
  4.  He brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers. (v. 16)
  5.  He struck the rock, water gushed out, and streams flowed abundantly. (v. 20)
  6.  He rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven. (v. 24)
  7.  He sent them all the food they could eat. (v. 25)
  8.  He let loose the east wind from the heavens and led forth the south wind by his power. (v. 26)
  9.  He rained meat down on them like dust, flying birds like sand on the seashore. (v. 27)
  10.  He turned their rivers to blood; they could not drink from their streams. (v. 44)
  11.  He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them. (v. 45)
  12.  He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust. (v. 46)
  13.  He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet. (v. 47)
  14.  He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning. (v. 48)
  15.  He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt. (v. 51)
  16.  He brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the desert. (v. 52)
  17.  He guided them safely, so they were unafraid. (v. 53)
  18.  He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance.  He settled the tribes of Israel in their homes. (v. 55)

HOW THE ISRAELITES TREATED GOD:

  1.  They did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law. (v. 10)
  2.  They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. (v. 11)
  3.  They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved. (v. 18)
  4.  They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the desert? (v. 19)
  5.  They said:  “Can he also give us food?  Can he supply meat for his people? (v. 20)
  6.  They did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. (v. 22)
  7.  They kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe. (v. 32)
  8.  They flattered him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues. (v/ 36)
  9.  They often rebelled against him in the desert and grieved him in the wasteland. (v. 49)
  10.  They put God to the test and vexed the Holy One of Israel. (v. 41)
  11.  They did not remember his power – the day he redeemed them from the oppressor. (v. 42)
  12.  They put God to the test and rebelled against the Most Hight by not keeping his statutes. (v. 56)
  13. They were disloyal and faithless like their fathers; as unreliable as a faulty bow. (v. 57)
  14.  They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols. (v. 58)

HOW GOD RESPONDED TO THE ISRAELITES:

  1.  God’s anger rose against them; He put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel. (v. 31)
  2.  He rejected Israel completely. (v. 59)
  3.  He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among men. 9v. 60)
  4.  He sent the ark of his might into captivity; his splendor into the hands of the enemy. (v. 61)
  5.  He gave his people over to the sword; he was very angry with his inheritance. (v. 62)
  6.  Fire consumed their young men, and their maidens had no wedding songs. (v. 63)
  7.  Their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep. (v. 64)
  8.  He rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim but chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved. (vs. 67-68)
  9.  He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens. (v. 70)
  10.  He brought David to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. (v. 71)

THOUGHTS:

The people of Israel rebelled against God and were not faithful to Him.  They forget the miracles of God and put God to test by making demands from him.  These were recorded in the Bible so that we can avoid the same errors.

The purpose of reviewing the history is to teach the next generation the works and ways of the Lord so that their children will know the Lord and trust Him.  Today, we have also the same obligation to teach our children God’s laws and truth for them to follow.  Are you doing it?

The next generation of Israel followed God with words and not with their hearts.  Their faith are cheap, and their repentance was empty.  God wants our conduct to back up spiritual claims and promises.
