SCRIPTURE: SONG OF SONGS 2
The Beloved described himself as a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.
LOVER’S DESCRIPTION OF HIS BELOVED:
- My darling is among the maidens like a lily among thorns. (v. 2)
- She is my dove in the clefts of the rock (v. 14a)
- Her voice is sweet and her face is lovely. (v. 14b)
THE BELOVED DESCRIPTION OF HER LOVER:
- My love is among the young men like an apple tree among the trees of the forest. I delight to sit in his shade and his fruit is sweet in my taste. (v. 3)
- His banner over me is love in the banquet hall. (v. 4)
- His left left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me. (v. 6)
- He comes leaping across the mountains bounding over the hills. (v. 8)
- He is like a gazelle or a young stag, standing behind our wall, gazing through the windows, and peering through the lattice. (v. 9)
- He said: ” Arise, my beautiful darling, come with me. (v. 10, 13)
- He is mine and he browses among the lilies.” (v. 16)
- He is like a gazelle or like a young stag on the rugged hills. (v. 17)
THOUGHTS:
This book enumerated both the pleasant and painful experiences of a loving relationship.
PLEASANT EXPERIENCES:
- Protection received from his shade (v. 3a)
- Sweet taste of his fruit. (v. 3b)
- Company to the banquet hall. (v. 4)
- His tender expression of love. (v. 6)
PAINFUL EXPERIENCES:
- Mountains 9v. 8)
- Walls (v. 9)
- Winter season (v. 11)
- Enemies like foxes that creep in and destroy your work. (v. 15)
We should always be alert and expect the Lord to come. (v. 8) to stand (v. 9a), to look (v. 9b) and to speak (v. 10) to you. He will leap on the mountain to be with you because no obstacle can stand between Him and you. When you spend time in loving communion with Christ, it is like spring time after the winter (vs. 10-13) and the dawning of a new day. (v. 17)
