SCRIPTURE: ISAIAH 5
This chapter contains a song (vs. 1-7), the woes (vs. 8-23) and judgments (vs. 24-30)
The nation of Israel is the vineyard which God has taken care of. But the people’s ingratitude and selfishness made Israel a corrupted nation.
THE WOES:
- The rich stole from the poor. (vs. 8-10)
- People became drunk, satisfying their sensual pleasure serving themselves without serving the Lord. (vs. 11-17)
- Those sinful people are full of deceit and wickedness questioning God’s counsel.
- Those who breakdown the distinction between right and wrong, calling evil good and good evil, putting darkness for light and light for darkness, bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. (v. 20)
- Those who consider themselves wise and clever in their own sight. (v. 21)
- Those who pervert justice, accept bribes and deny justice to the innocent. (v. 23)
JUDGMENT:
- God struck them down, the mountain shook and the dead bodies were like refuse in the street. (v. 25)
- The invading army conquered the land. (vs. 26-30)
THOUGHTS:
God’s chosen nation was supposed to bear good fruits, to carry out His work and uphold justice. But their fruits were bad. They had bloodshed, injustice and oppression. How about you? What kind of fruit do you produce? Is it good or bad, useful or useless?
GOD CONDEMNED THE ISRAELITES FOR 6 SINS:
- Exploiting others. (vs. 8-10)
- Drunkenness (vs. 11-12)
- Pride (vs. 18-19)
- Twisting facts (v. 20)
- Egoistic and big headed (v. 21)
- Perverting justice (vs. 22-24)
As a result of their sins, God punished Israel with the invasion of Assyria. Let us examine ourselves if we have committed the above sin or not. Confess it to the Lord and seek forgiveness from God before destruction awaits us.
The people feast with drinking and partying. But Isaiah predicted that many would die of hunger and thirst. Their pleasure did not have God’s blessings and eventually, their dead bodies were like refuse in the street. (v. 25). Leaving God out of our life will allow sin to come in. So, be sure to enjoy life with the presence of God in our hearts.
People often make excuses to cover up their sins. They refuse to take God’s Word as the moral standard. Instead, they set up their own standard with no distinction between good and evil. As a consequence, their moral choice was distorted leading them to much suffering.
