SCRIPTURE: ISAIAH 10
MEMORY VERSE:
“Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless.” (Isaiah 10:1-2)
The leaders in Israel were greedy. They robbed the poor and the needy with their selfish end unjust laws. But what good is all the wealth when the day of judgment comes.
GOD JUDGMENT ON ASSYRIA (vs. 5-19)
The Assyrians destroyed and put an end to many nations. They were God’s tool for punishing Israel but they became proud of their conquest. So God had to humble them and judge them for their evil deeds.
THE REMNANT OF ISRAEL (vs. 20-34)
The remnant of Israel will rely on the Lord, the Holy one of Israel. In His grace, God promised Judah that Assyria would not capture Jerusalem. Assyria will be cut down to size. In the midst of wrath, God gives hope to His people.
THOUGHTS:
Who will be judged by God?
- Those who make unjust laws and issue oppressive decrees. (v. 1)
- Those who deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice for the oppressed people. (v. 2a)
- Those who make widow their prey and rob the fatherless. (v. 2b)
God used Assyria to judge His people. Assyria had conquered many nations and enlarged their empire. The king Assyria became proud and arrogant. So God will bring judgment on Assyria. If we do not acknowledge God to be in control of our life, we are bound to fall.
The Assyrians were a tool in God’s hands but they boast of their great power. When a tool boasts of greater power than the one who uses it, it is in danger of being discarded. In the same manner, we are useful only to the extend when we allow God to use us.
The remnants are those who remained faithful to God despite the horror of the invasion. The key to being a part of the remnant is faith. The key to being a true Christian is also faith in God.
