SCRIPTURE:  ISAIAH 51

EVERLASTING SALVATION FOR ZION (vs. 1-16)

As the Israelites prepared themselves to leave Babylon and return home, God gave them these instructions:

  1.  Look back – Look to Abraham and Sarah whom God had blessed.  Look back on how they exodus from Egypt.
  2.  Look up – Lift up your eyes and look at God’s creation.  Look up to God’s greatness and power.
  3.  Look forward – Look forward as you return to Zion to establish your kingdom.  Look ahead to see the defeat of your enemies.

THE CUP OF THE LORD’S WRATH (vs. 17-23)

The cup of the Lord’s wrath consists of ruin, destruction, famine and sword.  After the chastening, God promised Israel that he will take out the cup of wrath and put it into the hands of their tormentors.

THOUGHTS:

There were only few faithful remnants left.  So they felt alone and they lacked confidence.  God reminded them of their ancestors Abraham and Sarah who remained faithful to Him.  This encouraged them to fully trust in God.

Isaiah gave hope to those who follow God’s laws.  He assured God’s presence to those who face people’s reproached or insults.  He told them that God’s truth will always prevail.  When you suffer people’s persecution because of your faith in God, do not be afraid.  God will deal with them.  Just continue to love and obey Him.

The Israelites suffered because of their sins.  But God promised to restore Jerusalem as a holy city where His Holy Temple will be rebuilt.
