[:en]Jeremiah was thrown into prison because he was accused of deserting to the Babylonians (37:13) when he told the people that whoever stayed in this city will die, but whoever went over to the Babylonians will live (38:2). So the official took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah in the courtyard of the guard. He was lowered by ropes into the cistern and soak down into the mud (38:6). Ebed-Melech, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace helped him out of the cistern (38:7, 13) King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and asked him secretly what the Lord had told him. Jeremiah told Zedekiah that he will be captured by the king of Babylon and this city will be burned down. (v38:23)23[:]
